Toothpaste is an important part of taking care of your teeth. You can brush without it in a pinch, but a good toothpaste will help you maintain a healthy smile. While there are toothpastes that provide extra fluoride, fight gum disease, freshen breath and whiten teeth, almost all varieties have the same ingredients. So, what’s in your tube?
Most toothpastes have a detergent in them. This is not the same detergent you use on your clothes. The detergent causes your toothpaste to foam and spread around your mouth and teeth. They also have an abrasive that will scrub the surface of your teeth to remove food debris and plaque and minor stains. That mint flavor you like, or the bubblegum taste that your kids enjoy comes from a flavoring agent. Since your toothpaste needs to remain moist, it contains a substance called humectant, which will prevent it from getting dry in the tube. But to keep it from becoming so moist that it won’t stay on your toothbrush, it comes with a thickening agent.
When selecting a toothpaste, you want to make sure that it contains fluoride, but if you are selecting a toothpaste for an infant, you might want to try a toothpaste that contains no fluoride. Before you decide on the brand or type of toothpaste, you should talk with your dentist about your specific needs, and see what he recommends for your smile.
