Fall is a great time to review fundamentals of oral hygiene. Just in time to get your routine back in check before the holidays! Here are some things to consider as you review.

Toothbrush: Make sure you are taking care of your toothbrush. Toothbrushes only last 3-4 months! When purchasing a new brush, make sure to choose one with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This will ensure a quality product that won’t harm your teeth or gums if used properly.

Brushing: Use short, tooth-wide strokes and gentle pressure. Brush your teeth twice a day, for 2 minutes each time. This will keep your teeth clean without damaging your gums or enamel.

Flossing: When flossing, use about 18 inches of single-filament dental floss. Wind the thread between two fingers, one on each hand, and use a gentle sawing motion with a clean portion of thread for each tooth. This will remove food debris and plaque from in between your teeth and help keep your smile strong.

Chew Gum: To activate your body’s first defense against cavities, chew sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after a meal. This will trigger saliva flow, which will clean your mouth. It also delivers fortifying substances to strengthen tooth enamel.

Mouthwash: Therapeutic mouthwash may be a beneficial addition to the oral hygiene routine of some people. Be sure to choose a product with the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure that it will help kill bacteria, rather than simply temporarily freshening breath.

Visit The Dentist: Shore up your home efforts by visiting the dentist twice a year. If you are in the Boise, Idaho area, visit Dr. Connaughton at Tree City Family Dental for your next appointment. Call us at 208-286-2699 today!
