Tree City Family Dental provides inlays and onlays as an excellent way to restore teeth with small to moderate decay or fracture. They are perfect for teeth with too much damage to be restored with a filling, yet are more conservative than a crown. Our dentists, Dr. Connaughton and Dr. Bator, will create inlays and onlays that are incredibly strong due to the fact that they are created outside of the mouth with materials that we cannot use directly in your mouth for fillings. These materials actually strengthen the tooth and protect it from fracturing.

In addition, inlays and onlays fit almost perfectly into the prepared surface of the tooth, reducing the size of the seam between the restoration and the tooth. This helps keep decay from returning under the restoration. Inlays and onlays require a greater initial investment than a regular filling; however, in the long run, inlays and onlays can be a better investment than fillings because their greater strength can lead to a longer service time.

In the procedure, decay and any old restorations are removed and cleaned from the tooth. An accurate, digital impression or 3D video is made of the prepared surface using CEREC® CAD/CAM. The computer creates a virtual model of the tooth, which is used to design and create a porcelain (tooth-colored) onlay or inlay in Boise, Idaho. The restoration is then bonded onto the surface of the tooth. An inlay covers only 2 or 3 surfaces of the tooth and is used to restore a small amount of decay. An onlay actually covers one or more cusps (the chewing surfaces of the tooth). Our dentists will help you determine which type of restoration is right for your smile.
