Anxiolysis is the process that our dentists provide to relieve anxiety. There are multiple ways to do this at Tree City Family Dental. First, Dr. Connaughton and Dr. Bator want to make sure you are completely comfortable with treatment and know what to expect. We provide comfortable chairs, pillows, and blankets as needed. Our office also has noise-cancelling headphones to reduce “dental sounds” associated with treatment. In addition, we provide sedation dentistry in Boise, Idaho, to help you feel calm.
We offer a mild sedative, such as Valium, to relax you during dental procedures. Valium is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, although we may use different medications based on the duration of the procedure. A benzodiazepine sedative is a good option for many patients because you will still be awake for the procedure but will feel much more relaxed. Patients who have used these medications for treatment report knowing that the procedure is occurring, but not caring about it as much. Also, they report that time seems to pass by much faster. It will be necessary to have someone drive you to and from the appointment since low levels of the medication can remain in the body for a few hours after the procedure.
Nitrous oxide is another option for anxiolysis. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is fast acting and leaves the body quickly. This is an advantage in the dental office because it allows patients to leave on their own to drive to work or home. Nitrous oxide makes you more relaxed and time seems to pass more quickly. It has worked for many of our patients.
