Dental professionals like Dr. Connaughton go through years of school and training that allows them to care for the health of your mouth with dental procedures. However, many treatments are performed inside of teeth and the jaw bone, areas a dentist cannot see with the naked eye. For this reason, we have cone beam CT equipment at Tree City Family Dental that produces high-resolution, 3D radiographs that help our dental team perform treatments with precision care.

A cone beam CT is an advanced dental X-ray that shows us your teeth, gums tissue, jaw bone, nerve canals, sinuses, and nasal cavity. It works just like a traditional X-ray does, except its beam is cone shaped and it creates 3D radiographs instead of 2D ones. In order to have this device scan your mouth, you must remove all jewelry and stand still as the cone beam’s arm rotates around your head, taking images of your oral cavity.

Because this tool emits higher radiation levels, it is only used for complex procedures like orthognathic surgery, orthodontics, impacted teeth, root canal treatment, and implant placement. We also use a cone beam CT to diagnose and detect tumors, TMJ disorder, sleep apnea, and other conditions. When we know the position of your jaw and the location of your teeth, we are able to more accurately perform the treatments and procedures that improve your smile’s appearance and health.
